Source and credit
- Data: PRIME Database Group (primeinfobase.com), Consolidated Historical Shareholding Data of companies listed on NSE. It is published with PRIME’s quarterly shareholding tracker press releases; the latest used here is PR-397 (4 Aug 2026, June 2026 quarter).
- Ingestion: the Data bank’s
primeinfobasesource (prime_shareholding_history,prime_shareholding_industry) fetches the file, keeps every version, and audits it. - Credit and redistribution: the owner approved publishing derived charts with credit. The source file itself is not redistributed.
What the numbers are
- Universes: all NSE-listed companies (mainboard), Nifty 500 and Nifty 200. Quarterly from June 2009.
- Share by value: the market value of a group’s holding as % of the universe’s total market value at quarter end.
- Disjoint groups: private promoters, government as promoter, FIIs, DIIs, retail and HNIs. The remainder (“other”: bodies corporate, NRIs, trusts and similar) is 5–11% over the history and is shown as “other”.
- DII includes mutual funds, insurance (LIC sits inside insurance), banks, financial institutions and pension funds.
- Free-float share: a group’s holding as % of market value excluding promoters.
- Industry table: how each group’s holdings are spread across industries, for the last two quarters (each group sums to 100%). It shows where a group’s money sits, not the group’s share of an industry.
Checks (Data bank audits on the 2026-10-01 fetch)
- All 25 figures quoted in PR-397 match the file. Examples: private promoters 41.36%, MF 11.58%, FII 15.88%, DII 19.15%, LIC 3.48% across 284 companies, individuals 9.51%. The quoted MF-FII gaps and sector allocations match too.
- Every group implies the same total market cap. Free float equals market cap less promoters within 0.035 points. The published sums (for example total institutional, and retail plus HNI) equal their parts.
- MF plus insurance never exceeds DII, and LIC never exceeds insurance.
Caveats
- FII figures were restated by PRIME from its June 2023 report onward.
- Shares by value move with prices: a group’s share can rise because its stocks outperformed, without any buying. The value charts and the flows section help separate the two.
- These are aggregates. Company-level ownership, from NSE shareholding-pattern filings, is planned.
- Coverage depends on which companies had filed by PRIME’s cut-off; usually 97–99% of listed companies.
